Volunteers in Pittville Park
We meet on the third Thursday of each month for two hours in the morning, and work in a different part of Pittville each time, depending on need.
We provide general maintenance support to Borough Council staff, e.g. sweeping, leaf clearing, weeding and cutting back, litter picking. Our most significant achievement so far has been to clear the thick brambles, ivy, self-seeded trees etc. from the south edge of the Upper Lake, thus allowing a view across the water from Pittville Lawn to the Pump Room.
We hope to become more involved with planting and other garden-related projects in the medium to long-term.
We recently agreed a work plan with the Borough Council's parks development team.
Our volunteer group was formed in November 2009 and we have provided about 496 hours of support up to early December 2011. There are now over twenty of us and if you'd like to join the team, please Email the Secretary .
Another area where we will need volunteers in the future is in looking after coin-operated dispensers for duck and swan food. Again, Email the Secretary if you'd like to know more.
Most recently we were joined by Borough Council staff to clear leaves from the Long Garden on Pittville Lawn. Click the press release to read about it.
A postscript:
Many people wonder about the small lake on Albert Road which usually looks very dirty. This is a
'residuum' and is an important part of keeping the Upper and Lower Lake clean. For a more scientific explanation look at this informative webpage.
