![]() Friends of Pittville seeks your help! We are campaigning to restore Pittville Gates to their former glory, and are building up a fact-file on their history. Dr Steve Blake has given us a head start, but there’s plenty we still need to find out. Can you answer any of the following? Q1. When were the gates built?
Q2. Who designed the gates?
Q3. Who made the stone pillars and ironwork?
Q4. When did the gates cease to be part of the Pittville Estate, and who acquired them?
Q5. Who designed the 1897 arch and lamp, and what more can we discover about their maker Mr C H Channon (see Echo, 5 November)?
Q6. When were the side gates removed, and what happened to them?
Q7. When was the ironwork last painted?
Q8. When was the 1883 horse trough in front of the gates removed, and what happened to it?
Q9. Does anyone know of detailed images or illustrations of the original pre-1897 gates?
Q10. Does anyone have good pre-war or post-war photos of the gates? Click here for a link to a recent article in the Gloucestershire Echo.
